Form As A Tool

I had a really fun day running the Writing For Television workshop for the Fermanagh Writers Group last weekend. We talked a lot about 3 act structure.  The structure used in television and film writing has a lot of similarities to the use of forms in poetry. In both cases I would advise using the form as a tool for rewriting. I find it best to generate your raw material first and see if it can be gently massaged into a sonnet or into 3 act structure or whatever form you’re working with. If you start with the form and try to force a piece of work into that straitjacket you are likely to end up with a lifeless thing with no soul. And what is the point of poetry or any writing if it has no soul?
